Two typewritten copies of extracts from John Wingate Thornton's book attempting to prove that the original settlement of Massachusetts Bay Colony was not Salem (1627-1628) but Cape Ann (1624) and 1894 papers claiming Gloucester, Mass., as site of first town meeting and the first public school in America presented by John J. Somes to the Committee of Executive Council at Boston, Mass., and subsequent newspaper accounts.

John Wingate Thornton (1818-1878), a Boston lawyer, historian and antiquary, was a founder of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and was elected to membership in the American Antiquarian Society in 1855.
